I came across a situation where the bookmarklets weren't working on someone's profile page (I think some stuff change in the Facebook layout?), so I tweaked it a little bit. If you've had the "Can't find id, you need to be on profile page" problem, maybe it works now. Maybe it doesn't.
Oh, and as many have reported (I'm not very quick on reading mail these days), the URL that "Add to Mafia" and friends uses allows you to add ANY Mafia Wars player to your Mafia, whether or not you're Facebook friends with them or not. I just tested this and it's for real (Jennifer, you are now in a dear friend's mafia!). A couple of points about this:
1. This is bad. Wanna protect yourself from getting attacked by someone? Just add them to your mafia. 2. It's pretty funny. Sorry, can't help it. 3. It's Zynga's headache. 4. "Bullies" can use this for their purposes, whether or not my bookmarklets are published. 5. You could make some insane add-the-whole-world-to-your-mafia bookmarklets using this. 6. I won't. 7. Zynga will probably close this hole pretty soon. 8. I just can't believe they let this in. It's like they don't think their shit through at all. 9. I think it's fair that everybody is aware of this.

"Add All" working again + some other stuff
Ok, for those of you who read comments to these notes and hang out in the group, this is old news, but there are at least two working fixes to "Add All". The new version up on heartrate.se is based on a tip provided by Quadratic Equation, that you can use the URL:

to add people ? I did try that, but since it gives an error code when loaded, I assumed it wasn't working... Quadratic Equation was a little bit more persistent and actually tested if it worked, and it does! Thanks a lot!
Update: Even though it says "Added X" for all friends X, it only adds those friends who play Mafia Wars. Sorry about that; think of it as "Tried adding X". Will change later.
There's another version around by Sergey Shushunov: read the instructions here. It uses a different technique (for geeks: loads the URL in a one-pixel iframe instead of using XmlHttpRequest, so therefore doesn't have the "same origin" problem ? a drawback with this, as far as i understand, is we can't tell when/if it has loaded... or can we?) and has a really sweet looking user interface! I might change mine to use that.
Mafia Wars bookmarklets toolsmiths are popping up all around, check out Vern's Mafia Tools which has some nice stuff based on mine and Spockholm's work. Also check out Big Richie's mafia tools. I haven't really had time to test either of these, but I bet they're really cool!

Another username-related update
My update yesterday broke some things; bookmarklets did no longer work on MW profiles, including perhaps most seriously the Gift bookmarklet so that you couldn't get your private key. This is now fixed...
...and I just realized yet another problem; while the update made the bookmarklets work on Facebook profiles of username-enabled friends, they didn't work on Facebook profiles of username-enabled people who are not your friends. This is now also fixed.
There might still be situations where it's not working. Please report this to the group; read instructions at this page on how to report problems. Please don't send messages to my inbox, I'm getting flooded with mails so I answer most of them with a template message saying "please post the group instead", this is nothing personal, I don't think you're stupid for messaging me, in fact I'm honored. But please don't. :-) Unless it's really a private matter, of course.
Bookmarklets are now working from username-enabled profiles... and code is published
When Facebook introduced the very cool new username feature, the bookmarklets stopped working. Well, not for long ? thanks to a fix from Martin Hedman, the code that gets your Facebook ID is now working again. Re-install your bookmarklets!
Well, except the "Add to Mafia" that still isn't working, but for completely different reason. Let's hope the very kind and good people over at Zynga fixes this issue.
Do you want to be a hero like Martin? Are you a skilled Javascript or PHP programmer? Then you'll like this: All the code for heartrate.se is now published at http://mafiatools.googlecode.com/ . The Javascript code (that is compressed and formatted into bookmarklets) is published under the GNU General Public License. The PHP code that drives the web site is published under the GNU Affero General Public License. This means, in short, that you're free to modify and re-distribute the code, but you must re-distribute the source code under the same terms as the original.
The code is provided as is, with no real documentaiton. The code is the documentation. But it's a bit messy and ad hoc. :) Anyway, send me your patches to myfirstname at mylastname dot se!
Also, I'm gonna have to figure out some new way of distributing news updates to y'all. I'm no longer allowed to message all members of the group, since we became > 5000. Bääh. I guess maybe one of them pages will do.
Add tools not working
None of the Mafia Wars "add" tools, such as "Add to Mafia" and "Add All" are currently working, because of changes to Mafia Wars. Your status invite link doesn't work either. This is because of changes to Mafia Wars, probably just a temporary bug.
Let's just hope it gets fixed. There's nothing I can do about it.
Zynga are aware of the problem and are working to fix it.
UPDATE 2009-06-20: Several have notified me of the new friend add URL, http://mwdirectfb10.zynga.com/mwfb/remote/html_server.php?xw_controller=friendbar&xw_action=send_add&fid=some_id - using this, I have updated "Add to Mafia", along with its closest friends, "Add to Mafia: NW" and "Add and Remove". I have only tested briefly, but it seems to work! (although they give no real feedback). Thanks to Jason Younker and several others for telling me.
However, "Add All" can not be made to work with this URL; we need to have an URL on apps.facebook.com for this to work. (if you're wondering why, see Same origin policy). I'm currently in low-Internet-access-mode, so I don't have much means to test this or figure out something that works for "Add All".

Cuban items added
I added Cuban collection items and loot to the gifting tool. Credits for listing the IDs go to Martin Hedman; see this Mafia-Wars.org thread. Martin's gifting tool is also updated. He also has a new bunch of sweet bookmarklets, some of them based on the work of yours truly, such as the oft-requested Limited Loot buyer.
I haven't really tested the Cuban stuff. Let's hope it works. :-)

Check out the Top Mafia Chart, very useful in combination with the new download mafia tool, and also see the other video walkthroughs ? if you're having troubles figuring out how the gifting tools or the analyze button is supposed to work, this just might be what you needed. And last but not least, try the excellent Mafia Wars playlist for your gangster soundtrack.
Problems with "Add All"
Patrick Toussaint was the first of many to report that "Add All" stopped working. Strangely, there seems to have been some changes to MW that affects some, but not all, users. If you are one of us for which it's still working, well, good for you!
If you're having problems, you'll need to re-install your "Add All" bookmarklet from heartrate.se.
Unfortunately, due to the changes, the tool can no longer say: "You have added x AKA y to your mafia", because it can't be sure that you actually did. Instead, it'll just say "Tried adding x with unknown result".
If anyone has any clue or idea about which users this affects, and why, please post to this forum thread. Please keep any discussion about this problem to that thread.
Thanks to all who helped with this problem, especially Kenneth Heutmaker who provided some very useful information about the cause of it, and Richard Philips who posted a work-around.

Good problem descriptions help me fix bugs ? here's an example of an excellent bug report from Kathryn Mullholland that helped me locate and fix a bug that affects all bookmarklets and might make them pick the wrong user ID in some rare situations, actually I should write an announcement about that but not now. Now I'm gonna go make an apple pie. Mmmm.
